The peak current in the motor is set by the driver and is manually adjusted with a screwdriver on a pot located on the driver board.
Its not impossible to have the currents adjustable in firmware but would need extra hardware and would only make sense in case of a close loop, so on short, afaik nobody uses it like that.
There are quite a few boards that have firmware set current now, Rambo is one of them.
