Can't you just feed the belt end coming from the motor directly underneath the white block (now its going over and around), i.e.together with and at the same height as the belt end coming from the idler? Wouldn't this make the belt parallel to the x-axis? Having both ends at the same height would also remove the torque on the x- carriage that you have now (which IMHO is also a potential reason for the step loss you are experiencing).
